Medal No. 20 – David and Goliath
After David had been secretly anointed as king by Samuel, the Philistines were once again preparing for war against Israel. The Philistine army stood on one of the mountains, while the Israelites led by Saul stood on a mountain opposite. Out of the Philistine army came a giant, armored from head to foot, ready for a battle with a daring Israelite. At that time, David the shepherd was requested by his father Jesse to take some provisions to his brothers in the battle field.
Upon his arrival, David learned about the giant and suggested to Saul that he be the one to fight against him. Unarmored, young David took five stones, put them in his shepherd's sling and aimed it at Goliath. The stone hit Goliath's forehead and the giant fell down dead. The medal design emphasizes the size of Goliath the giant against small David.
As a reward, Saul gave David his daughter as a wife, along with a rich dowry. David impressed the People of Israel with his outstanding courage, which was proof of his leadership ability and, from then, he was to become a central figure within the people.
