Medal No. 13 – Samson and Delilah
Samson, last of the Judges, was a Nazarite devoted to G-d, who neither drank wine nor cut his hair. In his time, the Philistines ruled and troubled the Israelites, who were unable to stop them. Samson's entire mission was to fight the Philistines and he did this single-handed. The third woman in his life was Delilah, a Philistine girl. The Philistines, afraid of Samson's exceptional strength, paid Delilah to discover the source of his strength. Samson revealed to Delilah that his strength was derived from hair that had never been cut. When Samson slept, Delilah cut his hair and thus his strength was lost. The Philistines took him, gouged out his eyes and threw him into prison.
Samson's life was dedicated to the people of Israel. His being a Nazarite guarded him and enabled him to resist the Philistines and not be harmed by them, until the moment when Delilah betrayed him by revealing the secret of his strength to the enemy.
