Medal No. 17 – Solomon's Judgement
When King Solomon sat on the throne of his father, King David, he requested wisdom from G-d, in order to be able to befittingly judge and reign over the people. The first proof of his wisdom came when two women with one baby approached him, each claiming that the baby was hers. The King asked for a sword to cut the baby into two. At that moment, the true mother had mercy on her baby and cried out, beseeching the King not to kill the baby but rather give it to the other woman. This scene is depicted on the medal.
The brilliant way in which King Solomon solved the mystery and discovered which of the women was the real mother has turned this judgement into a symbol of Solomon's wisdom. Solomon's wisdom is emphasized in the Books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, which dwell on the significance of life.
