Medal No. 15 – Elijah in the Whirlwind
Elijah the Prophet worked tirelessly and mysteriously, alone, against the hundreds of false prophets who drew the people towards idol worship. Three years of drought and famine came as a punishment to the people and Elijah's role as prophet was destined to end. Fifty young future prophets announce that on that day, Elijah would be taken away by G-d. Elisha, Elijah's disciple and successor walks with Elijah, refusing to part from him for a single moment. With his miraculous mantel, Elijah created a path across the Jordan River and together they crossed on dry land. Then came a sudden appearance of a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire which had come to take Elijah to heaven.
The medal presents this dramatic moment. Elijah dressed in his mantel is drawn up to heaven by the chariot, in a whirlwind.
According to Jewish tradition, Elijah was taken up to heaven but did not die. He is said to visit homes on Passover Seder nights, be present at circumcision (brith) ceremonies and will be the future harbinger of the Coming of the Messiah.
