Crown Daisy

Crown Daisy (Crysanthemum  Coronaruim = Glebionis Coronaria)
Sixth in the "Flowers of Israel" Series

The Crown Daisy is common on nitrogen and phosphorus-rich soils close to residential areas, along roadsides and especially in woodlands, where its golden colors stand out.

An aerial photograph taken during its flowering season can help in locating the areas of the crown daisy. Its flower-heads are an important source of nectar and pollen for bees, flies, butterflies and beetles. It has been found that the pollen and petals of the Crown Daisies emit different scents. Some have poisonous substances that protect the pollen from predators and some attract the pollinators. In other continents as well as in the Mediterranean lands, where they have spread, Crown Daisies have brought about a change in the insect population, by attracting certain species and repelling others.

The scientific name "chrysanthemum" means a "gold crown" (chrys = gold, anthos = flower).
