GOLDFINCH
Fifth in the "Birds of Israel" Series

One of Israel's beautiful songbirds, the goldfinch is common from Europe to Asia, in North Africa, as well as in the Mediterranean region. It measures 12–14cm in length, has a wingspan of 21–25cm and weighs 14–19 grams. The bright red coloring on its head stands out and the yellow stripes on its wings are noticeable when it is in flight. It feeds on seeds from thistles, which it manages to extract using its sharply pointed beak. The female builds a cup-shaped nest, lays 4 to 6 eggs and incubates them for about two weeks. During this time, the male brings her food.

In Israel, the goldfinch is found mainly in the north and central parts of the country. It is hunted as a cage bird and this is one of the reasons why it has been declared an endangered wildlife species.
