LESSER KESTREL (Falco naumanni)
Fourth in the "Birds of Israel" Series

The Lesser Kestrel is a small falcon that breeds from the Mediterranean across southern central Asia to China and Mongolia. It migrates southwards to Africa for winter. In Israel, it is found in the hilly regions of the Galilee, Mount Carmel, Judean Hills, Jordan Valley and northern Negev Desert.

A small bird of prey, it feeds on invertebrates and insects, which it often catches while in flight. It forages in flocks and nests in colonies, usually in hilly areas or in spaces within rooftops, always close to open areas of prey.

The Lesser Kestrel measures about 30cm, has a wingspan of 60-70cm and weighs about 100-200 grams.

Urbanization and use of pesticides have harmed its habitats and until recently its global population had been diminishing. Today, conservation projects are successfully underway to preserve the threatened species.
