The 22nd International Chess Olympiad
Official Award Medal, 5737-1976

The International Chess Olympiad takes place once every two years, each time in another country. Israel hosted the Chess Olympiad for the first time in 1964. In 1976 Haifa hosted the 22nd Men's Olympiad, the 7th Women's Olympiad and the 46th Congress of the International Chess Federation, and many famous world champions participated in the event (75 national champions from 52 countries).

Obverse: In the center, the emblem of the International Chess Competition, adorned by an inscription in Hebrew: "Women VII, Men XXII, Israel 5737". The English inscription, carrying the above makrs the date, 1976. Around the rim, an inscription: "Chess Olympiad" in Hebrew and English. Below, the Latin motto of the International Federation: "Gens Una Sumus" (We are all one family).

Reverse: Stylized chess pieces upon a stylized chess board. Below, in small Hebrew letters: "Shamir Bros".

Edge: The State emblem with the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. The silver medals bear "Silver 935" in Hebrew and "Silver" in English. The gold medals bear "G916.6".

Serialization: All medals are numbered.

Designer: The Shamir Brothers.

Engraving: Zechovoy.

Mint: Bronze and Silver 59mm - Zechovoy. Silver and Gold 35mm - Israel Government Mint Jerusalem.
