Yehohanan Hyrcanus Prutah- Hasmoneans

John or "Yehohanan"Hyrcanus I (135-104 BCE) was grandson of Mattathias and son of Simon of the Hasmonean priestly family.
He was both High Priest and a successful, energetic ruler of the people. After the death of Antiochus VII of Syria in 129 BCE, he achieved the complete independence of Judaea, greatly expanding his kingdom by undertaking conquests throughout the whole of the Land of Israel, including Moab and Edom to the east. He also converted the Edomites to Judaism. He was the first to issue a Jewish coin. The small bronze Prutah with double-cornucopia symbolizing prosperity and plenty on one side, and Hebrew inscription with the name of the leader, title "High Priest", and "Council of the Jews", on the other side, was to be the first of the Prutahs minted by the Hasmoneans.

*Exposing the coins to water (showering, bathing in the sea, pool, high body acidity) will cause tarnishing and loss of their natural patina. Details on the coins are also liable to be rubbed away by water and a damaged coin cannot be restored or repaired.
