Tribe of "Zebulun"
State Medal, 1993/5754

The series of painting depicting the Twelve Tribes by Salvador Dali honored Israel's 25th Anniversary. Though not Jewish, Dali was profoundly impressed by the rebirth of a Jewish state after 2,000 years of exile. Zebulun: " Zebulun dwells by the sea-shore, his shore is a haven for ships, and his frontier rests on Sidon" (Genesis 49:13). Although Zebulun was regarded as a tribe of sailors, the Prophetess Deborah praised it for not behaving like the other sea-faring tribes, Dan and Asher. The territory of Zebulun stretched from the area of central Galilee, today known as the Valley of Zebulun, to Haifa.
