Tribe of Joseph

The Tribe of Joseph medal is the third in the series of twelve drawings by Salvador Dali in honor of the 25th anniversary of the State of Israel. Joseph, the youngest of the sons of Jacob, was also his father's favorite. Jacob prepared a coat of may colors for Joseph. Joseph, like David and Solomon after him, was a man of contrasts: a dreamer and interpreter of dreams, but also a realist and man of action of such capacity that he became the deputy of the Pharaoh of Egypt. The inspiration to depict Joseph as the mythical unicorn came to Dali from Moses' blessing to Joseph "The firstling of his herd, grandeur is his, and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox" (Deut. 33:17).

Obverse: Tribe of "Joseph" - colored silk-screen depicting a unicorn, symbolizing the cornucopia. Above, the inscription "JOSEPH" in Hebrew and English. Below, artist's signature.

Reverse: Dali's work, a seven-branch menorah and circle of figures dancing the hora. In the lower portion, along the circumference, the artist's signature

Edge: State emblem with the words "STATE OF ISRAEL" in Hebrew on the right and in English on the left and serial number. Bronze/tombac medal - "BRONZE" in Hebrew and English; Silver medal - "S 999" in Hebrew and English; gold medal - "G-750" in Hebrew and English.
