"SUPREME COURT IN ISRAEL"
Seventh in the "Jerusalem of Gold" Bullion Coin Series
Legal Tender issued by the Bank of Israel
The impressive Supreme Court building in Israel, inaugurated in 1992, celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017.
The architectural elements of the building symbolize values of justice and law, as well as reflect Jerusalem’s rich architectural history. Many ancient styles and contrasting elements blend together: inside and outside formed by natural light from large windows and skylights, old and new architectural styles, lines and circles. Lines represent law - "You are righteous….and Your laws are straight," (Psalms 119:137) - and circles, justice - "He leads me in circles of justice," (Psalms 23:3).
The beautiful building was donated by Dorothy de Rothschild and designed by Ram Karmi and his sister Ada Karmi Melamede from Tel Aviv, winners of the architectural competition. The site of the Supreme Court, the judicial branch of the State of Israel, is close to the Knesset, the legislative and executive branch of the government.
Obverse: The central area of the building leading to the courtrooms, known as “the gatehouse”, is built in the form of a pyramid inspired by Zechariah’s Tomb and Absalom’s Pillar in the Yehoshafat Valley, at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Around the pyramid area is the library, where volumes containing centuries of legal thinking from many countries are found.
Common Reverse of the Series: The Lion of Megiddo, with its stylized curved tail, is taken from an ancient seal excavated in Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley, dating from the 8th century BCE. The seal belonged to Shema, the servant of Jeroboam II, Israelite King. The lion is also the symbol of the Tribe of Judah and of the eternal capital of Israel, Jerusalem. The same Lion of Megiddo appeared in the past on the Israeli 5 Lira Banknote (1958), 5 Lira Coin (1978), and on the Half Sheqel Coin (1980). Above the figure of the lion appears the State of Israel Emblem and below it the word “Israel” in English, Hebrew and Arabic.
