The Jerusalem Theatre
13th in the "Jerusalem of Gold" Bullion Coin Series
Legal Tender issued by the Bank of Israel
The Jerusalem Theatre is located in the heart of the Talbieh neighborhood of Jerusalem, quite close to the Presidential Mansion. The Theatre building, which has been proclaimed a special edifice designated for preservation, is a unique architectural structure, serving as an important cultural center.
In 1958, a contest for the architectural design of the theatre building was announced by the Jerusalem Municipality. In 1964, the first cornerstone was laid down and, seven years later, in 1971, the new building was inaugurated with a 970-seat hall.
Since its inception, the Jerusalem Theatre has become the largest center in Israel for culture and art, where the finest of stage, screen and visual arts are presented. In addition, the Theatre excels in musical performances; it is home to the Jerusalem Symphonic Orchestra, as well as to leading dance groups, both from Israel and abroad, and independent artists. Each year, nearly a million people come to enjoy hundreds of performances, be it drama with suspense, comedy with laughter, ever-loved classic plays or modern Israeli stage plays.
Obverse: The Jerusalem Theatre facade, showing the artistic stone and concrete elements of the building. Above is the face value and mint year in English and Hebrew, and the Star of David mintmark. The left border is inscribed with the gold fineness and weight, and the upper right border, with the word "Jerusalem" in English, Hebrew and Arabic.
Common Reverse of the Series: The Lion of Megiddo with its stylized curved tail, taken from an ancient 8th century BCE seal excavated in Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley that belonged to Shema, servant of King Jeroboam II. Above the lion is the Israel State Emblem and below it, “Israel” in English, Hebrew and Arabic.
