Maple Leaf

The Canadian Maple Leaf was first issued in 1979 as the official bullion coin of the government of Canada. The Royal Canadian Mint strikes the coin only from gold mined in Canada.

The Maple Leaf was the first bullion coin ever to be struck in gold 999.9/1000 (24 karat). This quality makes it significantly softer than the Krugerrand or American Eagle, and many relate to it as a benchmark for comparison of gold coin qualities.

A maple leaf adorns the coin reverse beside the inscription "Canada", the degree of fineness (9999) and weight (one ounce of gold). The obverse is engraved with a profile of Queen Elizabeth II, together with the face value (50 Canadian Dollars) and the mint year. Of course, the value of the metal is worth many times the face value.

The Maple Leaf is legal currency in Canada. Most investors buy the one ounce coin (diameter 33mm, thickness 2.87mm, weight 31.150 grams, face value $50), although other weights are available: half ounce, quarter ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce.
