Holon Jubilee

 

 

Only fifty years have passed since the first settlers arrived on the sandy shore south of Tel Aviv, leveling the desolate sand dunes, paving the first road and building the first houses whose yards were as yet pure sand with no appearance of gardens. In the initial stages, the dunes threatened to invade all that was built. The first settlers knew hard times and never-ending wars, both with the dunes and with the hostile Arab population in the vicinity.

The town-dwellers overcame all the hardships and continued work on construction, growth and development. Slowly the golden, desolate sand dunes became green. Shacks, tin huts and tents changed form and became modern stone houses with flowering gardens and the sounds of children in their yards.

Holon's surface area is 21,500 dunams, 35,000 pupils fill its fine educational institutes

many public services are eight municipal libraries, nine community centers, 14 clubs for senior citizens, four swimming pools and a thousand dunams of public parks and gardens.

Holon, which celebrates its jubilee this year, is the fourth city in size in Israel and its population numbers 165,000. The town is now bathed in green and only its name, derived from the Hebrew word for "sand", is reminiscent of the previous hardships.
