Fifth in the “Chiefs of Staff of the Israel Defense Force” Series
Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem in 1922 and joined the Palmach in 1940. He was arrested by the British and imprisoned for 5 months. When the Harel Brigade was formed in 1948 Rabin was appointed its commander and fought in the battles for the road to Jerusalem and in the city itself. He served under Yigal Allon and led troops in a number of battles on the southern front.
After the War of Independence he filled a number of important positions in the IDF before being appointed Chief of Staff in 1964. He led the IDF during the Six Day War in 1967. Following his retirement from the army at the end of that year, he was appointed Ambassador to the U.S.
During his political career he served as Minister of Labor 1973-1974, as Prime Minister from 1974-1977, and as Minister of Defense from 1984-1990. In 1992 he was elected Prime Minister for a second term and declared his intention to achieve a peace agreement while preserving the security and defense of the country. Within a year he signed “the Declaration of Principles” with the Palestinians. In 1994 Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein signed the “Washington Declaration” and in October of that year the Israel – Jordan Peace Treaty was signed. In December 1994 he and Shimon Peres received the Nobel Peace Prize.
On November 4, 1995 Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by an attacker in Tel Aviv following a demonstration for peace.
