The colors of the Israel Flag - blue and white - are inspired by the light blue stripes on the white tallith, the Jewish prayer shawl. In the center of the flag is the Star of David, formed by two overlapping triangles, one pointed upward and the other downward. This ancient symbol is thought to have become adopted as a specifically Jewish symbol in the 14th century.
The first Zionist flag was made by request of David Wolfson, Theodor Herzl's second in command, in 1897, in preparation for the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland. The Zionist Flag was finally adopted as the Flag of the State of Israel, in October, 1948. Ever since, it has been a proud symbol of the State of Israel, its citizens and Jewish people all over the world.
