Congregation Shearith Israel, the first in North America, was founded in 1654 by 23 Spanish and Portuguese Jews who fled to "New Amsterdam" from the threat of the Inquisition in Brazil following its colonization by the Portuguese.
The synagogue building, designed by architect Arnold Bruner, was completed in 1860 it incorporated remains of older buildings of the community, emphasizing its historic continuity and permanence.
