Reunification of Jerusalem
Israel's 39th Anniversary of Independence Coin 1987/5747
Jerusalem is truly unique and is a city sacred to millions of worshippers. It is the capital of Israel and the center of the Jewish world. It is a city where people of many religions and cultures have learned to live together, to respect each other and to make tolerance and coexistence the themes of their daily life. It is a city of culture and the arts, of music and art and theater and film. It is a city of age-old olive trees and wildflowers. To mark the 20th Anniversary of the city's reunification, a special commemorative coin has been minted. It depicts Ammunition Hill, a memorial site to the soldiers who fell in the war which reunified the city, and the Lions' Gate (St. Stephen's Gate) the historic gate of the Old City Wall which is the approach to the Via Dolorosa and the Dome of the Rock. It was through this gate that the first Israeli soldiers entered the Old City in 1967. This coin represents a memorial to the courage and bravery which brought down the dividing walls, swept away the minefields, and paved the way to rebuilding Jerusalem as a city of peace and hope.
