The medal was issued for use by the Ministry of Defence.


In 1961, Israel successfully launched a meteorological rocket which was designed and launched by a group of Israeli scientists and technicians.
In launching the rocket Israel became the seventh member of an exclusive club of states having the capacity to launch rockets.

Obverse
A stylized design of the globe. From a launching pad, Israel, a rocket takes off, making its way upward towards the stars in the sky. To the left, the legend "There shall come a star out of Jacob", - Numbers 24:17, in English and Hebrew. "Israel's rockets" on the rim in English and Hebrew.

Reverse
Above, to the right, the State emblem. In the centre in English, "Presented to..." blank space left for the name of the recipient. Below, Ben-Gurion's signature in Hebrew, and the legend "David Ben Gurion, Prime Minister".

Edge
The State emblem and the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. The silver medals bear "Silver 935" in Hebrew and "Sterling" in English, on medals minted by Amnograph, or "Silver" on those minted by Hecht.
