The bond of friendship between Holland and Israel was forged during the birth of the Jewish state, but its roots go back to the warm welcome Spanish Jewish exiles found in Holland in the 16th century. Dutch resistance to the Nazis in World War II and the valor many individuals displayed in rescuing Jews from death rave left a deep impression and sense of gratitude in Israel. Holland supported the United Nations partition resolution of 1947 calling for a Jewish state and quickly established diplomatic relations with Israel. Economic and cultural ties between the two countries are excellent. Both countries have used innovative solutions in coping with their unique geographies. Many of Israel's commemorative coins have been minted in Holland.
