Hebrew University of Jerusalem Jubilee
State Medal, 5735-1975
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was the first University to be established in Israel. On land purchased on Mount Scopus, the cornerstone was laid by Dr. Chaim Weizmann on July 24, 1918. The opening ceremony took place on April 1, 1925.
The War of Independence witnessed the severing of the link between Jewish Jerusalem and Mount Scopus. A second campus for the University was built on Givat Ram and a medical centre was started in Ein Kerem. In the wake of the I.D.F. victories in the Six Day War, the 19 year siege on Mount Scopus came to an end and a short while thereafter renovation of the campus on Mount Scopus began. Today the Hebrew University is spread over four complexes, on Mount Scopus, Givat Ram, Ein Kerem and Rehovot.
