Kiddush Cup
Judaic Art Coin. 1991 5752

The Kiddush Cup (wine goblet) is one of the most popular Judaic art pieces. "Kiddush" means sanctification of the Sabbath or holidays. The Kiddush cup is filled with wine and raised to symbolize remembering and sanctifying the Sabbath. This goblet also serves on other festive Jewish occasions, including circumcisions, weddings, Havdalah, and holidays. The 19th century decorated Kiddush cup featured on this coin is from Germany and belongs to the collection of C. Alster of the Netherlands. On the obverse of the coin is a modern Kiddush Cup made by Jerusalem artisan Zelig Segal.

Obverse: The face value, "1 NEW SHEQEL" on the B.U. Silver Coin, "2 NEW SHEQALIM" on the Silver Proof Coin, in Hebrew and English. Left is a modern goblet with straight, smooth lines, made by Jerusalem artisan Zelig Segal. In the upper left border is the word "ISRAEL" in Hebrew, Arabic and English.

Reverse: Classical style Kiddush Cup from 19th century Germany from the Netherlands Alster Collection, on the right, the Hebrew mint year 5752, left, the corresponding civil mint year 1991. Above the goblet, in the center, is the Israel State Emblem. Decorative elements adorn the coin around the border.
