GIVATI
OFFICIAL MEDAL (WTH COLORFUL BERET!) 5766/2006
2nd in the Series of Medals Honoring the Fighting Units of the Israel Defense Forces

On November 30, 1947, following the United Nations’ historic decision calling for the establishment of the Jewish State, an order was issued to form fighting units for defense. Among these units was “Givati” and it received the number 5. The Givati Brigade participated in over 180 combat operations during the War of Independence, and is particularly remembered for its battles in the south against the Egyptian forces. Since its founding, Givati has been characterized by the values of self-sacrifice and unlimited devotion. The love for the Land and our heritage are strengthened by the courage of the few against the masses. Givati was reestablished in 1983 and has played a central role in defending the country and securing its borders, while recording numerous tales of bravery. The symbol of “Samson’s Foxes”, dating back to the early days of the brigade, is an integral part of the Givati emblem.
The first medal is this unique series honoring the fighting units was “Golani”. The “Givati” Medal is the second and it includes a novel element: the Brigade’s Purple Beret appears in color. This added feature will be included on future medals honoring other IDF fighting units.

Reverse: “Yoav Fortress”, which serves as home to the Givati Brigade and a museum to its fallen; the word “GIVATI” in Hebrew and English appears along the upper edge of the medal.
