Israel's Brotherhood

Israel's 36th Anniversary of Independence Coin, 1984/5744

As the theme of Israel's 36th Anniversary of Independence, "Israel's Brotherhood" was chosen by the Bank of Israel with the aim of strengthening the awareness of brotherhood, unity and love of one's neighbor. The theme of brotherhood appears early in the Bible with the invocation of "You shall love your neighbour as you love yourself". The Talmud refers on many occasions to the need for practising love, brotherhood, peace and friendship".

Obverse: The emblem of the State of Israel, the word "Israel" in Hebrew, English and Arabic; the mint year 5744-1983, face value - 10 Sheqalim on the Gold Coin, 2 Sheqalim on the Silver Proof Coin and 1 Sheqel on the Silver B.U. Coin.

Reverse: A filigree likeness of branches and roots in the background, the Hebrew words "Achvat Israel', meaning 'brotherhood".

Edge: Gold coin-milled. Silver Proof and B.U. coins - 36th Anniversary of the State of Israel (in ancient Hebrew lettering), and the verse in English (Gen.13:8). "For we are Kinsmen".

Mint Marks: On the obverse of the B.U. coin, a Star of David, and on the obverse of the proof-gold and silver-the Hebrew letter "mem".
