Official Award Medal, 5739-1979

The Palestine railroad, 470km. developed during the British Mandatory regime, linked the Suez Canal by way of Lod and Haifa to Beirut in Lebanon. Following the War of Independence, only 121 out of 470 kilometers of railroad were operable. On the other hand, Israel built new lines. By 1969 there were 760 kilometers of railway lines and since then expansion has continued.

Obverse:
In the center, the Israel Railroad emblem and a stretch of rail. The citation, extending over three lines: "Make straight in the desert a highway" Isaiah 40:3. On the rim, to the left the English translation.

Reverse:
On the left - an old steam engine.
On the right - a modern engine serving the Israel Railroad.

Edge: The emblem of the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation, and its initials in Hebrew and English.

Serialization: All medals have been numbered.
