Tel Aviv and New York
State Medal, 1991/5752

Tel Aviv and New York have much in common, including bustle, color, entertainment, fashion, cultural life. The connection between the two cities has existed for over 85 years. When a handful of Jews dreamed of establishing Tel Aviv as a model Jewish town early in this century, they imagined it developing as the Israeli New York. Akiva Aryeh Weiss, who led the group that initiated Tel Aviv, even then compared it, in a pamphlet he wrote, to New York. Since then, New York has left its mark on the life of Tel Aviv in many and varied spheres, primarily in the arts, culture and entertainment, but in architecture and business as well.
