The Baptismal Site - Qasr al Yahud (Jordan River)

7th in the "Holy Land Sites" Numismatic Bullion Series

Situated on the banks of the lower Jordan River near Jericho, Qasr al-Yahud is revered by Christians around the world as the traditional site where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist. This sacred location marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and is considered one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in Christianity. For centuries, pilgrims from across the globe have journeyed to the Jordan River to renew their faith and immerse themselves in its waters, following the tradition of Christ’s baptism.

According to Jewish tradition, the site is also associated with the crossing of the Jordan River by the Children of Israel as they entered the Promised Land. As a result, Qasr al-Yahud holds profound spiritual significance for believers and visitors alike.

The name “Qasr al-Yahud” (“The Palace of the Jews”) is also associated with the nearby Church of Saint John the Baptist, a fortified structure with a distinctive fortress-like appearance. The site’s unique blend of striking architecture, desert landscapes, the flowing waters of the Jordan River, and its deep spiritual heritage creates an atmosphere of reflection, devotion, and inspiration.

Throughout the centuries, monasteries and churches belonging to various Christian denominations were established around the site, transforming it into a major center of pilgrimage, prayer, and baptismal ceremonies. Reopened to the public in 2011 after many years of closure, Qasr al-Yahud once again welcomes visitors from around the world. During major Christian celebrations, especially the Feast of the Epiphany, thousands of pilgrims gather here to participate in festive ceremonies and experience the spiritual significance of this holy place.
