Old Nazareth
Sixth in the "Ancient Cities of the Holy Land" numismatic bullion series

Nazareth, located in the Lower Galilee, is one of the most ancient and important cities in the Land of Israel. It has a rich history and holds international religious significance. The city is home to numerous historical and religious sites, alongside a market and an old city core that combines long-standing tradition with contemporary life.

Nazareth is not mentioned in the Bible and first appears in sources from the 1st century CE, during the Second Temple period, as a small agricultural village. Archaeological findings indicate earlier settlement in the area, particularly near the springs surrounding the city, reflecting continuity of habitation and the connection between Nazareth and the early development of culture in the Galilee.

Between the 4th and 11th centuries, especially during the Byzantine and Crusader periods, Nazareth flourished as an important Christian center. Many churches and public buildings were constructed, remains of which have been uncovered in archaeological excavations, attesting to its status as a holy city for Christianity. The narrow streets, arches, and inner courtyards of the old city preserve its traditional character and the Galilean architectural style that developed over generations.

At the center of the city stands the Church of the Annunciation, one of the most important churches in the Christian world. Built in the 20th century over the remains of earlier churches, it marks the site where, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary was informed of the forthcoming birth of Jesus. The church features an impressive dome and is decorated with artworks contributed by Christian communities from around the world. Nearby are St. Joseph’s Church and, at a short distance, Mary’s Well Church, associated with Orthodox Christianity. These and other sites are connected to ancient Christian traditions and serve as pilgrimage destinations.

Throughout history, Nazareth has served as a meeting point of cultures, religions, and beliefs - a city of coexistence, commerce, and history. Today, it is the largest Arab city in Israel and an important center of tourism, culture, and economy. Its markets, traditional architecture, churches, and historic buildings reflect the combination of past and present and attract many visitors each year.
