The Cardo was the main street in Jerusalem in Roman and Byzantine times, leading from Damascus Gate to Zion Gate. The Roman Emperor Hadrian built the Roman polis Aelia Capitolina on the remains of Jerusalem, following the Bar Kokhba Revolt of 132-135 CE. Aelia Capitolina was built like the Roman Cities of the time, with a Cardo, a main street, and a Decumanus, a secondary main street. On the Madaba Map of the Byzantine period, the Cardo and Decumanus of Jerusalem appear clearly.
