Offeq-1
The first Israeli experimental satellite, Offeq-1, was launched into Space during Israel's 40th year of statehood. Offeq-1 was launched into Space one day before Yom Kippur, 5749 (19.9.1988, 11:32 AM) by the Israeli Shavit launcher. Its mission was to test ability to enter into orbit; generation of solar energy; transmission reception from Space; resistance of its systems in a weightless vacuum; and characteristics of the Earth's magnetic field. Offeq-1 orbited the Earth once every 90 minutes. The closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit (perigee) was 248 km. and the farthest (apogee) was 1,170 km. The satellite ended its successful mission after 118 days.
Obverse: Accurate drawing of the Offeq-1 launched from Israel and circling the Earth from east to west. Above, the words "A STAR OUT OF JACOB" and the source "NUMBERS" in Hebrew and English.
Reverse: Inscription "OFFEQ-1" in Hebrew and English across the sky above the horizon. On the left, along the circumference, the words "FIRST ISRAELI SATELLITE 1988" in Hebrew and English.
Edge: On the bronze/tombac and palladium medals, State emblem with the words "STATE OF ISRAEL" in Hebrew on the right and in English on the left with serial number. On the palladium medal, the words "PURE PALLADIUM" in Hebrew and English. Gold medal - milled.
