Sigmund Freud was born of Jewish parents in the year 1856 in Freiburg, Moravia. From the age of four until just before his death, he lived and worked in Vienna. Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis and was the first to recognize the decisive influence of sex on human development and functioning. During his lifetime, he wrote many books in this field. His most important work on the interpretation of dreams reveals the importance of the subconscious for the human mind. Freud continued his productive scientific work to the very end of his long life. Publishing his most important work at the age of 80, he wrote his last book at 83, very shortly before he died His books have been translated into many languages. He actively participated in the founding of the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1910.
