Bnei - Beraq
Official award medal, 5721-1961
Following the destruction of the Second Commonwealth, Bnei-Beraq became known as a center for Torah study. Earlier, in the Bible, the name is mentioned as a city in the tribal territory of Dan. (Joshua 19:45). Modern Bnai-Beraq was founded by Hassidim who came from Poland in 1924. It became famous for its religious institutions and its yeshivot, such as Ponoviez and the yeshivah named after the "Chazon Ish". In the course of time many factories and shops were set up in Bnei-Beraq and in 1949 it achieved municipal status.
