Scientific Achievements in Israel
Israel's 37th Anniversary of Independence Coin 1985/5745

The State of Israel occupies a special status in the international scientific world. Despite Israel's size, it has achieved its outstanding position by virtue of its scientific and research framework, which permits a scope of scientific activity and achievement in many different fields of vital and practical research and technological development.
1985 marks the 60th Anniversary of the opening of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem and that of the "Hebrew Technion" in Haifa. It also marks the 60th Anniversary of the beginning of activities at the experimental station in Beit Dagon, now known as the Volcani Institute for Agricultural Research.
1985 also marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, which later developed into the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, and the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Its first president was Professor Martin Buber, who was succeeded by the late Professor Aharon Katzir.
