The Tribe of Dan medal is the fifth in the series of twelve drawings by Salvador Dali in honor of the 25th anniversary of the State of Israel. Dali drew the inspiration for depicting Dan as a snake from Jacob's blessing: "Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path that biteth the horse heels so that his rider shall fall backward" (Genesis 49:17).
