Hanukka Lamp from Russia
Hanukka Coin 5733-1972

The seventh of the Hanukka coins has as its theme a Russian lamp of cast lead, from the Feuchtwanger collection at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The stylized lions support a lamp on top of which rests a crown. They are taken from Jewish symbols appearing on 18th century Holy Arks in Poland and the Ukraine. The diagonal lines, on the base of the lamp, form diamond-shaped geometrical designs which indicate that the lamp is of 20th century origin.

Obverse:
The face value "5 Lirot" in Hebrew, left the Israel State Emblem. Below, center, the word "Israel" in Hebrew. Around the upper border, from left to right "Israel" in English and Arabic, the mint year 1972 and 5733 in Hebrew and the Hebrew inscription "25th Anniversary of the State".

Reverse:
A Russian Hanukka lamp and below it the inscription "20th century Hanukka Lamp from Russia" in Hebrew.

Edge:
The B.U. coin is smooth. The proof coin is milled.

Mint Marks:
On the obverse of the B.U. coin, the Star of David, and on the obverse of the proof coin, the letter "mem", centered in the lower border

Designer:
Obverse - Nathan Karp.
Reverse - Rothschild and Lippman ("Roli").

Mint:
Israel Government Mint, Jerusalem.
