Keren Hayesod Sixtieth Anniversary
Official Award Medal, 5740-1980

Keren Hayesod and the United Israel Appeal were the central fund raising agencies for the World Zionist Organization, afterwards the Jewish Agency, for financing the development of Israel. The fund was established in London in 1920, in order to implement an extensive Zionist development program. Before the State was established, the proceeds of Keren Hayesod were devoted to immigration, absorption, settlement, education, development, water resources, public works, investment in economic enterprises (electricity, potash, Zim, etc.) and building the Tel Aviv port. With the establishment of the State, many of these responsibilities were taken over by the Government, while Keren Hayesod devoted itself to financing immigration, absorption and settlement.
