The Sea of Galilee and Capernaum
State Medal, 5741-1981
The Sea of Galilee, which in Talmudic days was known as the Sea of Genosar, receives most of its water from the Jordan River.
On its shores stands Tiberias which was built on the ruins of the Biblical city of Raquet. Kfar Nahum (Capernaum) occupies the place of an ancient settlement through which passed one of the roads leading from Palestine to Babylonia in ancient times.
Christian tradition has it that Jesus and some of the apostles lived there. Over the years Christian pilgrims were drawn to this place. In Kfar Nahum a Jewish synagogue was unearthed dating back to the 3rd century together with many other discoveries from the Talmudic era.

Edge: The State emblem and the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. The silver medals bear "Silver 935" in Hebrew and "Silver" in English.
