Swimming

Swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports. With the hot summers in Israel and access to four bodies of water - the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, Dead Sea and the Lake of Galilee – Israelis are drawn to swimming.

In the Olympic Games in London 2012, the Israeli swimmer Yakov Toumarkin, who had won several medals in the past, broke the record for Israel when he became the second Israeli in history to get through to Olympics swimming finals. Amit Ivri was the first Israeli female swimmer to compete in an Olympic semi-final in the Olympic Games in London 2012.

The year 2017 opened well for the Israeli swimming team. In January, the team won five medals at the 2017 Geneva International Challenge in Switzerland. At this same event, the Israeli Youth Swimming Team also won two medals. In March, at the Madrid Championship, Amit Ivri came first in the 50 meters butterfly and second in breaststroke. The Israeli Swimming Team together did well at the Madrid Championship, winning a total of twenty-two medals.

The Bank of Israel has issued the "Swimming" Coin as a token of encouragement for the Israeli Swimming Team for future events and especially for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
