Daisy Parrotfish (Chlorurus sordidus)
Eighth Coin in the "Red Sea Marine Life" Series

The Daisy Parrotfish is found in coral reefs in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Its varied body colors include blue-green, pink around its scales and in the stripes around its face, yellow in the front of its body. It feeds on algae that grow in the reefs and with its sharp teeth, it is able to bite and grind the coral. Its name "parrotfish" is derived from the shape of its teeth, which resemble a parrot's beak. The Daisy Parrotfish is a sociable fish, usually found in couples or small groups. A male fish often leads the group, defends the group's territory and prevents outside males from approaching. Young parrotfishes are colored dark brown. Most are born female and become beautifully colored males, later in their lives.

Reverse Design (fish side): Meir Eshel

The $5 denomination coin is issued in collaboration with the Central Bank of the Republic of Palau.
