Joint Israel Appeal "For Jerusalem"
Official Award Medal, 5736-1976

The word "Joint" is an abbreviated form of "Joint American Committee for Aid Distribution". The Joint, organized in 1914, has done much in granting aid to Jewish communities which were impoverished during the First World War. Between the two wars and in the aftermath, the Joint did yeoman's work in directing aid to needy Jewish institutions, in rescuing people during the Holocaust and in financing their immigration to Israel, as well as emigrants from Islamic lands. In Israel the Joint maintains a chain of homes for the aged, hospitals, work shops for the handicapped and contributes toward the alleviation of suffering among the needy, aid for those requiring rehabilitation. In 1976 the Joint held, in Jerusalem, the "United Jewish Appeal" convention, which has a partner in the United States.
